Rostock Heath

The narrow street of the Rostocker Heide is a cross street in the historic city center of the Hanseatic city of Rostock . It connects Rungestrasse in the west with Buchbinderstrasse in the east. To the east it bends slightly to the south. The Rostock Heath is part of the former Rostock Neustadt .

history

The Rostock Heath was mentioned for the first time in 1588. The interpretation of her name is unclear, either it owes its name to an inn of the same name, or it was named jokingly after the Rostocker Heide urban forest , since in the southern city periphery in the Hanseatic city of Rostock, agriculture was carried out in small farms. In keeping with its character as a side street, it was only built with booths that were used as student dormitories around 1600.

The road was completely destroyed in the four-night bombardment of the British Air Force in late April 1942. In the 1950s, Rostock University built the catalysis institute of the chemistry department on Buchbinderstraße and on the south side of the Rostocker Heide , which was demolished in early 2008. There is a parking lot at the southwest end. After the fall of the Wall, modern commercial and residential buildings with bay windows were built on the north side. These houses belong to the Hopfenmarkt row of shops (not to be confused with the historic Hopfenmarkt, today's Universitätsplatz ). There is an entrance to this shopping arcade on the northern corner of Buchbinderstraße and Rostocker Heide.

The Rostock Heath, which is paved with cobblestones, is permitted for motor traffic to the west. Coordinates: 54 ° 5 ′ 15.7 ″  N , 12 ° 8 ′ 14.6 ″  E
