The red-bellied thrush ( Turdus rufiventris ) is a songbird belonging to the genus of the real thrushes ( Turdus ), which belongs to the family of thrushes (Turdidae).

description

The red-bellied thrush takes its name from its rusty-brown belly. It also has a brown-gray back, dark brown, yellow-orange rimmed eyes, an olive-yellow, straight beak and gray legs. Red-bellied thrushes are 17–25 cm tall, weigh up to 68 g (males) or 78 g (females) and have a life expectancy of up to ten years in the wild.

habitat

The range of the red-bellied thrush is found in South America and extends over large parts of Brazil , Bolivia , Paraguay , Uruguay and the north of Argentina . Red-bellied thrushes live close to people and prefer open areas such as forest edges, parks and gardens with abundant water resources.

singing

Both males and females sing, males much more often. The singing sounds fluting and melodic and can usually be heard around dawn and dusk. It is used to mark the territory and for courtship.

nutrition

The red-bellied thrush feeds primarily on insects , larvae , earthworms, and ripe fruits, including man-made fruits such as papayas , oranges, and avocados . The fruits of different types of palm are also on their menu.

Reproduction

The female lays two to four bluish-green eggs up to three times a year . The young birds hatch after 13 days. They are cared for by males and females together and fledged after 10–12 days.
