history

Belgian Rodenbach red beer

The development of the Belgian red beer was carried out by the “Rodenbach Brewery” (which was taken over by Palm Breweries in 1998 ) in Roeselare , West Flanders , in the 19th century. It has around 5% alcohol, a fruity-sour taste and a typical reddish color, which arises when it is matured in wooden barrels. The distinguishing features of this beer are an intensely dried malt , fermentation with a mixture of normal top-fermenting yeast and a lactic acid bacteria culture, and maturation in oak barrels.

"Original Nürnberger Rotbier" has been brewed according to its own brewing laws since the early Middle Ages. Since 1530 the top-fermented "white beer" has been brewed. In contrast to top-fermented wheat beer , red beer is a bottom-fermented beer that was exclusively brewed with barley malt. In 1597 there were 35 red beer and 11 wheat beer breweries in Nuremberg, as well as the municipal wheat brewery. The number was later limited by law. Original Nürnberger red beer is brewed again in the Altstadthof house brewery and the Schanzenbräu Nürnberg-Gostenhof brewery.

New developments

Red beer became known nationwide with the spread of small breweries , whose specialties often include red beer types. Red coloring through suitable storage is no longer the only beer preparation. The possibilities of brewing a “red” beer have increased. Alternatively, the coloring is achieved by adding colored malt (red malt). The color - like the taste - between a reddish yellow and reddish brown is influenced by the proportions of hops and malt.

The Irish brewery Murphy’s produces the Irish Red Beer . As with Kilkenny , this is a red ale , which also gets this color from the malt content. This type of beer is a common type of beer, especially in England.

There are examples that already contain the word part "red-" in the beer name. Such was the case when Robin the citizens brewery , which until the beginning of 2010 in Berlin-Friedrichshagen was brewed.

Red-colored beers that are not subject to the “German Purity Law” get their color from the addition of fruit or fruit juice. The beer names are then (mostly) not red beer , but rather cherry beer, for example, depending on the amount of fruit added . Such traditionally red “fruit” beers include the Belgian Kriek and other lambic beers .
