history
The synonym "sailor" was deliberately avoided to distinguish it from the counterrevolution.
The personal rank designation "seaman" (original designation: morjak ), which is less common internationally in naval forces, was decreed in 1935 as a replacement for the rank of "red sailor". The next higher rank introduced in 1940 was "Red Chief Sailor " ( starschi krasnoflotez ) corresponded to the rank of private in the army. In 1946 the ranks “Seemann” and “Roter Obermatrose” were replaced by “Sailor” and “Obermatrose”.
