Red Town Hall Wehrheim

The Red Town Hall is the town hall of Wehrheim , a municipality in the Hochtaunus district in Hesse . The listed cultural monument from 1859 is made of red bricks, from which the name is derived.

Construction of the town hall

In Wehrheim there was a medieval town hall with two towers below the Protestant church. The mayor appointed by the government of the Duchy of Nassau had his official residence there. After the March Revolution , mayors were elected for the first time by the townspeople in 1849. The first elected mayor was Peter Jäger.

In 1858, Peter Jäger and the local council decided to replace the old town hall with a new building in the same location. Since the introduction of the Nassau stock books in 1851 (the predecessor of today's land register ), a building application had to be submitted to the respective office (here the Usingen office ) for new buildings . In a letter dated July 11, 1858, the community applied for the construction of a town hall and a wooden warehouse and the expansion of the water pipe.

In 1859 the old town hall was torn down and on September 21, 1859 the foundation stone of the red town hall was laid. The inauguration took place in the late summer of 1860 (or 1861).

Town hall building

The building in the style of romantic classicism is based on the medieval brick high -rise buildings in northern Germany. The building is L-shaped. The corner of Hauptstrasse / Rathausplatz is the main entrance, an eye-catcher and crowned with a bell tower. The bell in the tower dates from 1944. The top of the tower is a knob and a weather vane. The main entrance consists of a portal with a Gothic portal arch, which is made of profiled corbels. The symmetrical facades of the two-story house are delimited by graceful round towers.

It was a relatively large town hall for the time. A joint use as a school or kindergarten was planned.

Reuse

After the regional reform in Hesse , Wehrheim became the seat of the large municipality of Wehrheim in 1972. Due to the additional tasks, the town hall soon became too small and parts of the administration were moved to a semi-detached house in the Wiesenau.

With the construction of the "New Center" , the municipal administration moved into the newly built rooms. The red town hall is used by local associations.

In 2017/2018 the building will be renovated, the main aim of which is to ensure that no more moisture can penetrate the town hall. A total of 171,000 euros are earmarked for this.
