George L. Kelling

George L. Kelling (born August 21, 1935 in Milwaukee , † May 15, 2019 in Hanover , New Hampshire ) was an American social worker and criminologist . Together with James Q. Wilson he developed the broken windows theory .

Kelling studied social work and received a Ph.D. in this subject from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. PhD . Before turning to criminal sociology, he worked as a probation officer . Kelling has taught as a professor at Northeastern Illinois University and Rutgers University . In 1982 he co-published the influential article Broken Windows. The police and neighborhood safety ”in The Atlantic Monthly .
