The Red City Book is a series of books by the city of Hanover from the Middle Ages , which is kept in the Hanover City Archives .

The red city book, also known as “liber civitatis” or “Stadt-Denck-Buch”, was so named because of its red-colored leather cover. The series of books mainly contains minutes of the results of negotiations before the City Council of Hanover, in particular cases involving voluntary jurisdiction .

The bound manuscripts were regularly updated from 1358 until 1430. Afterwards, they only contain sporadic entries until 1474.

The entries around the years are considered the beginning of the history of the city of Hanover

The last entry in the Red City Book was made in 1662.
