In various sports, red jersey denotes a jersey worn by the leader of a classification.

Winter sports

In the biathlon world cup , the leading athletes in each discipline are identified by a red jersey . The leader in the sprint or distance world cup in the cross-country skiing world cup wears a red jersey .

Cycling

In cycling , a red jersey is awarded at various stage races . Since 2010, a red jersey has been awarded at two of the three major state tours . At the Vuelta a España , the leader of the overall classification is awarded the Maillot Rojo and at the Giro d'Italia , the leader of the points classification wears the Maglia Rossa . A red jersey is also awarded for smaller tours such as the Tour de Suisse or the Tour of Austria .
