The red-headed fire beetle ( Pyrochroa serraticornis ) is a beetle from the fire beetle family (Pyrochroidae).

features

The beetles grow to be 10 to 14 millimeters long, making them slightly smaller than the similar scarlet fire beetles . The pronotum , the wing wings , but in contrast to the similar species also the head are colored red. The rest of the body is black.

Similar species

Occurrence

The animals occur mainly in Central Europe , but also in other temperate areas of Europe . They can be found on the edges of forests and clearings. They fly from May to June and are much rarer than the scarlet fire beetles.

Way of life

The larvae live under the bark of deciduous trees and feed predatory on insect larvae , but also on their own conspecifics.
