Rotterdam-Amsterdam is a German crime and detective silent film by and with Viggo Larsen in the leading role.

action

The clever detective Holm is hired by a Dutch diamond company to guard an upcoming transport with extremely valuable gemstones. Several times, diamonds have disappeared without a trace on such transports. At a stopover, he finds out that the box with the million dollar diamond treasure is empty. Holm immediately picks up the trail and has some hair-raising adventures to endure, including a wrestling match with the director of a juggler's troupe in a circus.

Ultimately, however, Holm and his assistant Lewis track down the real perpetrators. The mastermind is namely the sender of the package, the President of the Diamond Company, Hollyn. This has integrated two boxes into one in such a way that the smaller box can be lowered into the larger one by manipulation and disappears for the eye of the beholder. Caught by Holm, Hollyn commits suicide. His accomplices Hocker, agent of the Diamant Co., and Klasen, head of the juggler's troop, are handed over to the police by Holm.

Production notes

Rotterdam-Amsterdam was built in the winter of 1917/18. The four-act act with a length of 1198 meters passed the censorship in February 1918 and was premiered in Berlin's Mozart Hall in the same month.

Larsen's detective Holm was closely related to the role of the English master detective Sherlock Holmes.

criticism

“Richard Hutter, who wrote the text for this film, did an excellent job. With all the advantages of the advanced detective drama, it offers a highly interesting plot full of exciting and effective episodes. (...) Viggo Larsen as a director has again shown exquisite taste and great security in the creation of the scenes. As a detective, he is at the center of attention and, as always, has a compelling amiability. The other actors also show skill and understanding. "
