Robert Wuellner , also Robert Wüllner , born in Robert Wyss , (born October 25, 1885 in Lucerne , † August 11, 1966 in Berlin ) was a Swiss actor , director and film producer .

biography

The hotelier's son Robert Wyss trained as a singer after graduating from high school and made his debut at Vienna's Volksoper in 1909 . Wuellner then worked as an actor and in this capacity took part in a number of German silent films during the First World War .

From 1917 he also worked behind the camera, from 1919 mainly as a unit manager and assistant director for Joe May (e.g. in 1920 for Die Legende von der Sankt Simplicia and Die Schuld der Lavinia Morland and the following year in the two-part film Das Indian Grabmal ) before May (in his capacity as producer) made it possible for him to direct a film for the first time at the beginning of 1921. Wuellner's productions were not very successful, so he soon returned to assistant director (May's four-part play Tragedy of Love from 1922/23) and recording manager (e.g. for Dagfin , Der Meister von Nürnberg and Moulin Rouge ).

Then Wuellner switched to film production. Initially active as a production manager, he worked, together with his colleagues Karl Schulz and Erich Schicker , from 1931 to 1935 as a co-producer for his and Schulz 'company Schulz und Wuellner Filmfabrikations- und Vertriebs-GmbH . After this had to be dissolved in 1936, Wuellner teamed up with his producer colleague Hans-Herbert Ulrich and formed a joint manufacturing group with him until the beginning of 1938. Wuellner was then given his own production group and in this capacity was responsible for films for the Tobis production company from 1939 until the end of the war in 1945 , most recently in collaboration with director Karl Anton .

After the war Robert Wuellner withdrew into private life.
