ROUTE 66 Geographic Information System BV is a manufacturer founded in 1992 that was one of the first to offer mobile navigation solutions before the PNAs existed as independent products. The privately owned Dutch company offers navigation software for various mobile devices such as Series 60 cell phones, Pocket PC PDAs and Windows Mobile smartphones . In addition, PNAs with their own software have recently been offered.

On the cell phone or smartphone

Smartphones with the operating systems Symbian , Windows Mobile and Bada are currently supported. The software is a so-called on-board navigation system or sometimes just an on-board system . With this type of navigation solution, the map data is saved on the device (usually on a removable memory card ) and the route is also calculated. This is in contrast to an off-board system in which the calculation is carried out on a server on the Internet and the map data is usually also transferred from there to the mobile phone as required.

With the solution on the mobile phone, the position is usually read in using a so-called Bluetooth GPS mouse connected via Bluetooth . The GPS receivers integrated in some cell phones are now also supported. A detailed list of supported devices can be found on the manufacturer's homepage.

In addition to the pure software, there is also a kit version which, in addition to the data carrier (e.g. MMC or SD cards in various sizes), also includes a suitable Bluetooth GPS mouse and a universal car holder.

Pre-installed navigation solution

That with ROUTE 66 delivered Nokia 6110 Navigator was the first mobile phone with a standard installed on-board , except navigation of smart phones with their much larger size and their higher weight.
