The Rover P3 is a four-door sedan made by the Rover Company and was manufactured between 1948 and 1949.
The P3 came with engines with overhead inlet valves and upright exhaust valves (oise - overhead inlet / side exhaust, IOE ), which had been in development since the late 1930s. There were two versions: The Rover 60 had a four-cylinder with 1,595 cm³ and the Rover 75 had a six-cylinder with 2,103 cm³. The gearbox and the traditional Rover freewheel have been adopted unchanged from the previous model.
A vehicle suitable for the engine was developed. Although the styling of the body corresponded to the Rover 12 and Rover 16 , many of the body panels were new, only the fenders and the bonnet were taken over from the Type 12 unchanged. The outside of the car was 16 mm wider than the Type 16, and an additional 60 mm inside width was gained through better use of space. The new car had a 115 mm shorter wheelbase. Also new - and used for the first time in a Rover - was the independent front suspension, but the partially hydraulic brakes remained. Instead of a complete chassis, the car had a frame ending in front of the rear axle, and the semi-elliptical leaf springs were mounted on the body. This made for a larger spring deflection on the rear axle and thus better handling.
There were two body versions, a light six-seater sedan and a light four-seater "sports sedan".
The cars were expensive at £ 1080 for the "60" and 1106 for the "75". Because of production problems at the beginning of the post-war period and the difficulties in obtaining raw materials, an overly large production of cars was never planned. 1274 copies of the Rover 60 and 7837 Rover 75 were made until the car was replaced by the completely newly developed Rover P4 in 1949 .
