Roy Bhaskar

Roy Bhaskar (born May 15, 1944 in London , † November 19, 2014 in Leeds ) was a British philosopher and science theorist . He became known as the founder and representative of Critical Realism .

Roy Bhaskar was born in 1944 in London to an Indian doctor and a British nurse.

From 1963 to 1966, Bhaskar studied philosophy, political science and economics at Balliol College, Oxford . He then began a doctoral thesis on the relevance of economic theory for developing countries, but eventually turned to the theory of science.

Bhaskar has taught at several international universities, including universities in Edinburgh , Oxford , Sussex and City University London . Most recently, he worked at the Institute of Education at the University of London .

In 1975 his first major work, A Realist Theory of Science , appeared, in which he developed a general theory of science ("transcendental realism"). In The Possibility of Naturalism (1979) Bhaskar applied these considerations to the social sciences. Other influential works include Scientific Realism and Human Emancipation (1987) and his book on dialectics , Dialectic: The Pulse of Freedom (1993).

In 1998 he edited the introductory anthology Critical Realism: Essential Readings with other representatives of Critical Realism .
