Roy Chadwick

Roy Chadwick (born April 30, 1893 in Farnworth , Widnes , † August 23, 1947 in Woodford , Greater Manchester ) was a British aircraft designer. As chief designer at AV Roe & Company , he was responsible for almost all of the company's designs. In 1947 he was killed on a test flight.

Life

Roy Chadwick was the son of the engineer Charles Chadwick. He initially trained as a technical draftsman. In September 1911, at the age of 18, he became assistant to Alliott Verdon Roe in his aircraft construction company. His first independent design was the Avro Pike from 1915. In 1918 he was promoted to chief designer.

His most famous design was the Avro Lancaster bomber . After Operation Chastise , which was carried out with this aircraft , he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1943.

Roy Chadwick died in August 1947 during a test flight of an Avro Tudor 2. The crash, in which most of the aircraft's occupants were killed, was caused by the incorrect installation of an aileron . At the time of his death, Roy Chadwick was already working on the plans for the Avro Vulcan .
