Roy Geddes

Roy Geddes CNZM (* 1940 in Edinburgh ; † 25 August 2006 in North Shore City ) was a British chemist and biochemist and worked as the Dean of Science and Engineering at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Scientific career

He began his career in 1970 as a lecturer in the Faculty of Biochemistry at the University of Auckland , after completing his chemistry studies in Edinburgh with a BSc Hons and PhD and after two postdoctoral fellowships in physical biochemistry at the Australian National University (1967-1969 ) and at Georgetown University ( Washington, DC , 1965–1966).

In Auckland, he studied the structure and metabolism of glycogen, an energy storage polysaccharide, using physical and biochemical methods. His work provided evidence of the existence of a protein core in glycogen now known as glycogenin.

He was Deputy Dean of the University of Auckland from 1982 to 1985 and then Dean from 1986 to 1993. In 1994 he joined the Auckland Institute of Technology as Dean of Science and Engineering . During his tenure as dean of his faculty, the faculty moved into a modern and attractive building, and during his tenure the institute became the Auckland University of Technology , a transformation to which Roy Geddes made a significant contribution.

Friction stir welding

Roy Geddes described himself as the "catalyst" who drove the industrialization of friction stir welding in New Zealand after consulting TWI (The Welding Institute) on a trip to Great Britain. While working at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), he and his colleagues teamed up with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), Marine Industry Association (MIA), ION Automotive NZ, Circa Marine & Industrial and Ullrich Aluminum to create Know -How to disseminate and use on this subject.

At this point in 2004 it was announced that a number of 55 meter Protector-class patrol boats were to be procured for use by the Royal Australian Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy , and Roy Geddes recognized the opportunity for Australia and New Zealand to do so To be involved in construction. The naval engineer of these ships prescribed that the ships should have a friction stir welded structure. All of the AUT's friction stir welding projects were carried out on existing production facilities, which were modified at the university so that they could be used as friction stir welding machines.

Since mid-2005, the Donovan Group in Whangarei has been using friction stir welding in the manufacture of these aluminum ships. The Donovan Group uses a large CNC portal milling machine as a friction stir welding machine for large-scale production, which has been modified accordingly for the patrol boats.

The industrialization of friction stir welding in New Zealand has been contractually simplified since the Australian / New Zealand standard for "Welding Aluminum Structures" was adopted. This was one of the first standards to include friction stir welding, although it actually focuses on arc welding. It has an innovation clause in the first section, according to which "the standard can be used for other welding processes such as friction welding, including friction stir welding, [...] provided that all requirements of the standard are met."

Private life

He was married to Estelle Geddes and they were both known for their hospitality and cultural openness, as well as their excellent barbecues. Roy Geddes served as New Zealand representative on UNESCO committees and advised the New Zealand Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.

Honors

He received the Sesquicentennial Medal in 1990 and the Royal Society of New Zealand Silver Medal in 1999. In 2002, he became Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit . In 2007 he was honored with the Outstanding Contribution to Technology Education Award from Technology Education New Zealand (TENZ).
