Roy Gibson

Roy Gibson (born July 4, 1924 in Manchester ) is a British space official. He was director general of the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) and from 1975 to 1980 first director general of the European Space Agency (ESA).

Life

Gibson attended Chorlton High School and later Oxford and London Universities .

During the Second World War he served from 1944 in India and Ceylon as an officer in the Royal Corps of Signals under Louis Mountbatten . From 1948 to 1958 he worked in the British colonial administration in Malaysia . Back in London, he worked for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority until 1967 . He was Vice Director of the European Space Research and Technology Center (ESTEC) until 1971 , then Administrative Director of ESRO , and then General Director of ESRO in 1974. There he was jointly responsible for the transfer of the two organizations ESRO and ELDO into ESA in 1975, of which he was the first Director General from 1975 to 1980.

Roy Gibson was the first General Director of the British National Space Center from 1985 to 1987. Since then he has also advised the European Commission on space issues and helped set up the European Environment Agency .
