Royal Huddleston Burpee
Royal Huddleston Burpee, Sr. ( June 4, 1898 - January 13, 1987 ) was an American physiologist . He is best known for the burpee full-body exercise named after him .
Burpee was a World War I veteran . After the war, he received his PhD in Physiology from Columbia University . In the 1930s he developed the Burpee test. In 1942, the US Army adopted the exercise as part of their fitness test. During the Second World War he worked as a program director for the overseas territories of the United Service Organizations (USO). From 1946 to 1964, Burpee was executive director of the Bronx-Union Branch of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in New York City . He is buried in Long Island National Cemetery .
