(formerly Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital)

The Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) is the central hospital in the capital Banjul in the West African state of Gambia . On March 21, 2013, it was announced that the hospital had been renamed from Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, named after Edward Francis Small .

description

The state hospital on July 22 Drive (former name Independence Drive ) is considered the most modern in the country with 540 hospital beds and was founded under British colonial administration in 1853. The operations of the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) were improved in 1903 with the help of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny .

It has been called the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital since the late 1990s, as it is attached to the University of Gambia as a university hospital and trains students in medical professions. The first 15 students came to RVTH in November 2002. The hospital continues to participate in international research studies on malaria control and hepatitis disease.

Medical school

The degree in human medicine was created with the establishment of a medical faculty by Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh in cooperation with Cuba in 1994 to promote health reform. Up to now, Gambian doctors had to study in Senegal or the USA and Europe. The regulation of medical studies in Gambia is subject to the Department of State for Health and Social Welfare and the Gambian Medical and Dental Council .

The MBChB ( Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery ) course in Gambia takes about 6.5 years and is composed as follows:

  • 1 pre-medical semester
  • 4 pre-clinical semesters
  • 8 clinical semesters

The pre-clinical section is more closely aligned with the Cuban medical degree, while the clinical section is based on the structure and content of Great Britain and Europe, but with a special focus on tropical medicine. 80% of the lecturers are doctors and professors who graduated in a European / American country. For example, in addition to the Cuban doctors of the PIS (Promoting Integrated Health Services) program, doctors from the medical Swansea University in Wales also work closely with the University of The Gambia. Most students leave the Gambia after completing their studies in order to do their specialist training in the USA or Europe.

In addition to traditional medical studies, the RVTH also trains two other professional groups:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Science in Public Health
  • Master of Public Health in health promotion and development in collaboration with the Universities of Illinois and Iowa in the USA.
  • Master of Science in public health in environmental and occupational health .
