The Rubjerg Knude ( Danish knude : elevation) is a shifting dune between Lønstrup and Løkken ( Hjørring municipality ). The Natura 2000 reserve is an impressive natural beauty in Jutland .

Shifting dune

Steep coast north of Rubjerg Knude

The cliff coast between Lønstrup and Løkken is formed on around 15 km by ice-age sand deposits up to 50 m above sea level . It is eroded at a rate of several meters per year by erosion, forming a cliff called Lønstrup Klint with an upstream sandy beach of varying width.

Rubjerg Knude is the highest point on the Lønstrup cliff. It reaches a length of up to 1900 m and a width of up to 400 m. Rubjerg Knude itself is a good 70 m high. The upper 20 to 25 m consist of drift sand . Below is a steep coast up to 50 m high, which is built up from ice age deposits, with an example of isostatically scaled clods that is unique in Denmark .

The dune extends north-south and drops steeply towards the sea. In addition to the 50 m of the coastal cliff, the wind has piled up the sand, which was loose due to erosion, by another 50 m in recent decades, making it one of the largest shifting dunes in Europe with a height of up to 100 m. The largest shifting dune in Europe is the Dune du Pyla in France.

lighthouse

The lighthouse in 1912

On December 27, 1900, behind a dune that was only two to three meters high at the time, the Fyr , the 23 m high lighthouse, was inaugurated on the coast of Rubjerg , together with four outbuildings (the keeper's houses). It sent out a long beam of white light every half minute, followed by two short flashes. This signal could be perceived up to 42 km.

Strandfogedgården

In 1980, Vendsyssel Historiske Museum opened a sand and drifting sand museum in the rooms of the former lighthouse keeper's apartment . It had to be closed on August 31, 2002 due to silting.

From 2007 to 2009 a new exhibition on the natural and cultural history of Rubjerg Knude was developed in the Alte Strandvogtei ( Strandfogedgården ). It is open every day in July and August (except Mondays). The Strandvogtei is located on the main Rubjergvej road , about two kilometers south of the car park to the shifting dune.

Rubjerg Kirke

Rubjerg Church , around a kilometer south of the lighthouse, was also affected by the changes in the coast. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, drifting sand was deposited up to four meters high on the Rubjerg Church. The congregation then decided in 1906 to close the church and had a new church built further inland.

Sports

The dune and the adjacent cliff is a popular area for paragliders and hang-gliders . The regular sea breezes offer good starting conditions despite the relatively low altitude and attract many athletes from neighboring countries.
