Løkken is a small town in the Nordjylland region in north-west Denmark . It has 1624 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and belongs to the Hjørring municipality . The place is about 20 kilometers southwest of the town of Hjørring in Jammer Bay on the North Sea coast.

history

Løkken developed strongly due to the maritime trade between North Jutland and South Norway. From Jutland came v. a. Grain, flour and butter, while Norway supplied wood and metal. The trade took place with flat-hulled boats ( skude ), which could land outside of ports on the sandy beach. Sea trade at Løkken began in the 17th century. The neighboring towns of Blokhus and Lønstrup also took off. Løkken was the largest landing place in Jammer Bay and flourished in the early 19th century.

In 1821 Lokken had 235 inhabitants. In 1860 Løkken got its own customs post, in 1871 its own savings bank and a stagecoach connection to Hjørring . The number of inhabitants rose steadily due to trade and the establishment of businesses. In 1884 there were already over 500 inhabitants. At the end of the 19th century, sea trade lost importance due to new transport routes and increasing competition. The last merchant ship was pulled ashore in Løkken in 1908 and scrapped.

Inshore fishing and tourism have since become the dominant industries. The private railway line of the Hjørring – Løkken – Aabybro Jernbane between Aabybro and Hjørring with Løkken as its center, which was inaugurated in 1913, was a milestone for the tourist development of Løkken. The rail connection was discontinued and dismantled in 1963. The stately station building, which today houses a post office with a distribution center, has been preserved.

In Løkken, the Wehrmacht built bunkers for the Atlantic Wall in 1942/44 . Its ruins have been preserved on the north beach, but slipped from the dunes onto the beach in the course of coastal erosion .

tourism

Like Skagen and Lønstrup, Løkken scores with an intact townscape and a large number of shops and restaurants. Most holiday guests rent one of the numerous summer houses. But there is also a traditional bathing hotel that was opened in 1895.

Løkken is known for the fine bathing beach with 485 white bathing houses that are on the beach from May to October. They are privately owned and permits are issued by the local government on the basis of waiting lists. The stand fee is around 280 euros per season.

In 2014/15 the beach pier was renovated and the immediate vicinity upgraded. Is provided u. a. a bathing jetty for the handicapped and visually impaired, a sauna, beach volleyball fields , a coffee bar and a new slipway for fishing boats.

City bikes from the municipality of Hjørring are available in the village. Use is free.
