The Klaus Murmann Student Fund is a non-independent sub- foundation of the Foundation of German Business (sdw; Foundation of German Business ) based in Berlin . It is recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as one of the federal German organizations promoting the gifted .

It is named after the former employer president and CEO of the foundation, Klaus Murmann , and is aimed at high-performing, socially committed and talented students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines. In addition to strong academic achievements, scholarship holders should show a high degree of initiative and the will to shape society. The foundation sees its task in developing the potential of its scholarship holders. To this end, the more than 1,900 scholarship holders have access to a study-related support program (e.g. in the form of various seminars). They also receive scholarships from funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The funding agency comprises 46 groups of scholarship holders, four of them abroad ( London , Paris , Vienna, Zurich ). All groups are supervised by a trust professor , a trust manager, a trust school director, a trust alumnus and an employee of the foundation.

The funds of the funding agency come from the public sector as well as from grants from the Confederation of German Employers' Associations , around 100 funding companies, company-related foundations and private individuals.

The scholarship holders are selected according to the following criteria:

  • Social engagement (e.g. committee work at the university, participation in associations or in a party, voluntary engagement in the church or social institutions)
  • Determination
  • Social competence
  • General knowledge
  • Networked Thinking Ability
  • Communication skills
  • Above-average academic performance

All candidates apply via an online application portal after checking the formal admission criteria. The best applicants will then receive an invitation to a two-day assessment center in Berlin, where the final decision on admission will be made.

Special projects

Since 2005, the sdw writes in cooperation with the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation competition challenge entrepreneurship out to their fellows to give the opportunity to gain practical experience and entrepreneurial implement their own business ideas. In addition to financial support for their start-up projects, the participants receive a one-year qualification program to acquire entrepreneurial know-how.

In cooperation with the innogy Foundation for Energy and Society , the Klaus Murmann student funding agency is also offering an ideas competition for the implementation of your own energy transition projects with the Think Lab 2.0 initiative .

Special support programs are aimed at student teachers in the preparatory college, and daycare centers with equal opportunities in the junior initiative are aimed at childhood education students.

Some former scholarship holders are organized in the sdw Alumni association with the aim of promoting and supporting the current scholarship holders. The network was founded in 1999 and had almost 2500 members in 2019.
