Blokhus is a seaside resort in Jammerbucht on the Danish North Sea coast , which belongs to the Jammerbugt municipality in the Nordjylland region. The place is about 15 kilometers as the crow flies southwest of Løkken and has 511 inhabitants (January 1, 2020).
history
The name Blokhus has been in use since the 1630s and refers to the importance of the place for maritime trade with Norway : the warehouses were block houses ( blokhuse ) made of wood, which were imported from Norway as a kit. Trade with the neighboring province developed from the 16th century. From Jutland were v. a. Grain, flour and butter exported, Norway supplied v. a. Wood and iron. The trade route across the Skagerrak was only 70 nautical miles , and the sandy beach in Jammerbugten was as good of landing for boats with flat fuselage suitable.
The development of the town into a North Sea resort began in 1865 after the poet Meïr Aron Goldschmidt spent a vacation here. He published a travel diary ( Dagbog fra en Rejse på Vestkysten af Vendsyssel og Thy ) in which he raved about swimming on the open beach to Copenhagen society. As early as 1844, the ship merchant JCB Klitgaard had built a pension, which later became Hotel Nordsøen ; Especially those with lung disease and former cholera patients looked for relaxation here.
tourism
Blokhus is a popular holiday destination, not least because of its wide beach, on which car traffic is permitted, so that seasonal and day visitors outnumber the permanent residents many times over. German tourists rent holiday homes mainly in the summer months. Many of the Danes who have their own summer house in Blokhus live in nearby Aalborg . There is a regular bus service between Aalborg and Blokhus.
One of the oldest sea rescue associations in North Jutland is located in the village. Today the former rescue station houses a museum.
Fårup Sommerland amusement park is located six kilometers northeast of the town center .
