Rudolf Heinrich Revil (* 1916 in Strasbourg , Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine , † 1983 ) was a French composer and songwriter .

Life

Revil was born Rudolf Heinrich Weil, son of German-Jewish parents, in Strasbourg. In his childhood he learned the piano and began composing. While he was performing a specially composed piece at an amateur event, he was discovered by the French musician Nadia Boulanger , who, impressed by his talent, took him to Paris to continue teaching. From then on he lived in Paris and was able to establish himself by writing chansons . Before he had to flee the Nazis to New York City in 1939, at the age of 23 he had already written over 80 successful chansons, which were sung by Boris Vian , Francis Lemarque , Michel Vaucaire and Maurice Chevalier , among others .

On April 18, 1946, Revil took a flight from Brussels to New York City, with a stopover for refueling at Gander Airport . He took the Sabena airline . The aircraft, a Douglas DC-4 , could not find the airport due to the heavy fog, so the pilot reduced the altitude to have a clear view. It crashed. 27 people lost their lives. Only 17 people survived, including 16 passengers and one crew member.
