Rudolf Appel

Rudolf Appel (born June 11, 1915 in Vienna , † June 1, 1967 in Lilienfeld ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and fitter. From 1945 to 1959 he was a member of the Austrian National Council and from 1959 to 1967 a member of the Federal Council .

education and profession

Appel attended a five-class elementary school and then graduated from the public school in Vienna. He continued his education at the commercial training school and subsequently worked as an installer assistant and fitter.

politics

Appel joined the Socialist Workers 'Youth and Free Trade Union Youth in 1930 and became group leader of the Socialist Workers' Youth in 1933. Because of his political activities he was arrested during the Austro-Fascist era in 1933 and 1934 and imprisoned in the Wöllersdorf detention camp in 1935 . After the National Socialists came to power, further arrests followed in 1938 and 1943, with Appel being sentenced to death in 1943 . After his pardon, Appel was imprisoned in Moabit prison and in the Esterwegen concentration camp .

After the end of the Second World War , Appel was a member of the National Council from December 19, 1945 to June 4, 1959 and a member of the Federal Council from June 4, 1959 to June 1, 1967. He also acted as district secretary of the SPÖ Krems an der Donau and was a member of the Lower Austrian state party leadership.
