Rudolf Capell (born January 24, 1635 in Hamburg , † April 24, 1684 in Hamburg) was a German pedagogue, historian and philologist.

Life

Born the son of the Hamburg preacher Jodocus Capell, Rudolf attended the University of Rostock from 1652 , then the University of Wittenberg and the University of Gießen, and in 1656 earned his master's degree. After attending other academies, he returned to Hamburg, where he received the professorship for eloquence at the academic grammar school in February 1660 . In 1675 he exchanged this professorship with the professorship for history and the Greek language. During his time, Capell enjoyed a reputation at home and abroad as one of the learned men of his time. At the end of his life he mainly had to struggle with the scheming hostility of a colleague.

In total, Capell published 97 treatises in the historical and philological field.
