(Rudolf Eduard) Julius Gierke (* 1807 ; † 1855 ) was a Prussian lawyer , member of parliament and, in 1848, Minister of Agriculture .

Life

The merchant's son Julius Gierke studied law and later City Counsel in Szczecin . Gierke was married to Concordia Therese (née Zitelmann). The couple had five children, among them Otto von Gierke .

During the revolution of 1848/49 he was a member of the Prussian National Assembly in 1848 . On June 25, 1848, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture under Prime Minister von Auerswald , making him the first minister of the newly established ministry. The Locomotive, newspaper for political education of the people , said on July 24th, 1848: “ The farmer Rodbertus is minister of culture and the city syndic Gierke, the lawyer, has become minister - of agriculture. Are you playing upside down? “After the resignation of the Auerswald government with its six ministers on September 21, 1848, the Ministry of Agriculture was“ temporarily co-administered by the Minister of the Interior ”. In 1849 and 1850 he was a member of the first chamber of the Prussian state parliament . After the revolution he was president of the Bromberg Court of Appeal .

The Gierke couple died of cholera in 1855 . Their children grew up with relatives in Szczecin.
