Rudolf Fisch (doctor)
Samuel Rudolf Fisch (born November 19, 1856 in Aarau , † December 2, 1946 in Wädenswil ) was a Swiss missionary doctor .
Life
Rudolf Fisch was born in Aarau on November 19, 1856, the son of the post writer Ulrich Rudolf Fisch and Nina, née Keller. Fisch, who initially started an apprenticeship in saddlery , joined the Basel Mission in 1875 , where he trained as a missionary . In 1880 he began studying medicine at the University of Basel , which he completed in 1884 with a dissertation in ophthalmology . From 1885 to 1911 Fisch worked as a missionary doctor on the Gold Coast in Ghana , which was then part of the British colonies .
Rudolf Fisch, who married Emma, née Schneider, in 1887, died on December 2, 1946, two weeks after he had turned 90 in Wädenswil.
Act
Rudolf Fisch led a persistent fight against malaria , for better hygiene conditions, for quinine prophylaxis and against alcoholism . He was valued as a “ star surgeon ” and general surgeon. In 1900 he opened the country's first hospital in Aburi . Eight years earlier he had introduced the bicycle.
