Rudolf Gross (mineralogist)

Rudolf Josef Groß (born October 22, 1888 in Gaustadt ; † July 12, 1954 in Greifswald ) was a German crystallographer , mineralogist and university professor.

Rudolf Josef Groß was a son of the builder Benedikt Groß (1860–1924). He studied geology in Jena and Rostock, where he received his doctorate in 1913 under Eugen Geinitz . In 1918 he completed his habilitation in Greifswald and in 1919 became an associate professor in Hamburg. In the same year, Groß married the Greifswald lecturer in mineralogy Nora Blaßmann , daughter of Major General Franz Blaßmann (1855-1935) and Marie Wahl. The family lived in the house that still exists today at Karl-Marx-Platz 18, which is located on the green belt immediately west of the old town.

In 1922 Rudolf Groß became a full professor and director of the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute at Greifswald University . In 1929 he was dean of the philosophy faculty there. After a brief suspension, Groß was reinstated as director of the Mineralogical Institute in October 1947 and was elected rector of the university a year later. In 1949/50 Groß was a member of the Scientific Senate for National Education in Berlin and from 1952 deputy chairman of the Mineralogical Advisory Board of the State Secretariat for Higher Education. Groß was killed in a tragic accident.
