Rudolf Heimsoeth
Rudolf Heimsoeth (born September 9, 1880 in Cologne ; † 1968 ) was a German lawyer and entrepreneur. In his company Heimsoeth & Rinke was before and during the Second World War, the cipher machine Enigma produced.
Life
Dr. Rudolf Heimsoeth comes from a well-known and influential family in Cologne. His parents were the doctor and medical officer Dr Franz Heimsoeth and Bertha Heimsoeth, née Nacken, a sister of Hedwig Scherbius, b. Nacken, the mother of Arthur Scherbius , the inventor of the Enigma cipher . Rudolf Heimsoeth married Lilli Klöckner in 1911, daughter of the industrialist Peter Klöckner . Rudolf Heimsoeth's sister Else married the banker and lawyer Otto Strack , his brother was the philosopher Heinz Heimsoeth , a nephew was Harald Heimsoeth (1916–2007), a later German diplomat .
In 1934 he and Elsbeth Rinke (1879–1960) took over the Chiffriermaschinen AG in Berlin , where the Enigma was manufactured. The name and the legal form were changed to "Chiffriermaschinen Gesellschaft Heimsoeth und Rinke oHG" (short: H&R) in accordance with the law on the conversion of corporations of July 5, 1934, and the development and production of the machine continued. Dr. Rudolf Heimsoeth died in 1968.
