Rudolf Hendel

Rudolf Hendel (born September 21, 1947 in Rodewisch ) is a former German judoka who competed for the GDR . He won the title at the European Championships in 1970 and 1971.

Athletic career

The 1.76 m tall Rudolf Hendel started at TSG Rodewisch in the lightweight, the weight class up to 63 kilograms. In this class he won his first GDR championship title in 1965 against Eberhard Barth . In 1966 Hendel moved to Berlin for ASK and light middleweight, the weight class up to 70 kilograms. At the GDR championships in 1966, he finished second in his new weight class behind Günter Wiesner . In 1967 Hendel won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. In 1969 Hendel was second in the GDR championships behind Dietmar Hötger .

After moving the ASK Berlin to Frankfurt an der Oder, Hendel started for the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt . At the GDR championships in 1970, he won ahead of Hötger. In 1970 the European Championships took place in East Berlin. Hendel and Hötger reached the final in the light middleweight division, Hendel won and was European champion. In January 1971 Rudolf Hendel took third place at the Tournoi de Paris , at the GDR championships Hötger won the final against Hendel. At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 1971 , Hendel met Antoni Zajkowski from Poland in the final and defended his title from the previous year. At the World Championships in 1971 in Ludwigshafen, Hendel lost in the round of 16 against the Japanese Hideki Tsuzawa . After a win over the Irish Liam Carroll , Hendel was eliminated against the French Christian Desmet .

In 1972 Hendel took second place behind Lothar Fehre at the GDR championships . Hendel also competed at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Since Hötger was nominated for the light middleweight division, Hendel fought in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 80 kilograms. Hendel lost his opening match against Peter Jákl from Czechoslovakia by referee decision (Yusei-gachi). In 1974 Hendel reached the final of the GDR light middleweight championships again, but lost to Frank-Michael Friedrich .

Rudolf Hendel was a trained plumber. In the National People's Army he rose to the rank of major. As a trainer at the NVA he looked after Torsten Reissmann and Karl-Heinz Lehmann, among others . After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he was a staff sergeant in the Bundeswehr and headed a federal base. He was one of the co-founders of JC 90 Frankfurt (Oder) , which won the Judo Bundesliga for the first time in 1992.
