Kortokraks came from a humble background. The father was a worker, the mother a saleswoman - both convinced communists. After Hitler's " seizure of power ", the father had to go into hiding for a while, and the mother, with the boy by the hand, went miles to events with subversive leaflets under her coat. As a 14-year-old Kortokraks attended an art school in Graz , after the war he returned to the Palatinate and from 1946 studied at the Free Art Academy in Mannheim with Paul Berger-Bergner, among others . In 1954 he went to Paris . He later ran his own “School of Seeing” near Rome , taught at several art schools in England and was also a guest at the Worpswede artists' colony . In 1954 he came to Salzburg for the first time and became Oskar Kokoschka's assistant at the “School of Seeing” as part of the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts , and later he became head of the “School of Seeing” seminar in Salzburg.

Stylistically, Kortokraks has remained associated with a realistic painting style throughout his life. Still life with flowers, landscapes, cities and faces in pastel technique are characteristic of his art. On Kortokrak's 80th birthday, a large personal exhibition was held in Salzburg.

In 2013 he received the Art Prize of the Ike and Berthold Roland Foundation.

He lived in Salzburg and England. The farewell to the artist took place on September 17th, 2014 in Kuchl .
