Rudolf Kramer (* 1843 or 1844; † November 24, 1904 in Leipzig ) was a German writer , journalist and poultry expert . His pocket book on pedigree poultry breeding became a standard work on poultry breeding.

Kramer worked as an editor for the papers for poultry breeding , was editor-in-chief of the Allgemeine Deutsche Geflügelzeitung and published articles in numerous specialist journals of his time, including the magazine for ornithology and practical poultry breeding . His articles included reports from breed poultry shows across the country.

In 1899 he published the paperback of pedigree poultry breeding , which appeared with a foreword by Hugo du Roi . Du Roi praised Kramer as "one of the first poultry connoisseurs". The second revised edition appeared in 1908, the third revised again and with a foreword by Emil Schachtzabel under the title Kramer's pocket book of Rassegeflügelzucht 1926; it was reprinted in 1999. As “Der Kramer”, the book became a standard work in poultry farming. In contrast to other works, the first edition of the book contained not only descriptions, but also colored images made by various artists. It is considered to be the first breeding standard in German pedigree poultry breeding and has also been received internationally in specialist circles.

Kramer was active in various poultry breeding associations, so he worked from 1884 to 1893 as chairman of the Leipzig poultry breeding association and was an honorary member of the association of breeders of French chicken breeds. He also served as a judge for water fowl and chickens. In 1983, the poultry stock exchange called him one of "the great men in German pedigree poultry breeding of the previous century".

Kramer died in Leipzig in 1904 as a result of illness. As early as 1905, the Rudolf Kramer Prize was donated in his memory. The Saxon Poultry Breeders Association issued a commemorative medal dedicated to Rudolf Kramer in 2016.
