Rudolf Maeglin (born December 24, 1892 in Basel , † April 2, 1971 in Basel ) was a Swiss painter, draftsman and wood cutter .

Life

Rudolf Maeglin came from a middle-class background, his father was a wine merchant, his mother came from a family of silk manufacturers in Basel. After graduating from high school , he first studied medicine, took the state examination in 1918 and then assisted at the Geneva Cantonal Hospital . In 1919 he gave up the medical profession and became an artist. In 1921 he toured Italy. From 1922 he lived in Paris, attended the art academies Grande Chaumière and Colarossi , made trips to Brittany and Spain. In 1927 he returned to Basel, where he worked as a laborer on construction sites and in the chemical industry.

From then on he devoted his artistic work solely to motifs from this world of work. In 1933 he was a founding member of the anti-conservative Basel artists' association « Gruppe 33 ». From 1936 Maeglin worked as a freelancer. He mainly made woodcuts, and later became a member of the XYLON woodcutter association . From 1947 until his death he lived in a studio house in the Basel workers' quarter in Kleinhüningen , which was built for him by the architect Ernst Egeler , also a member of «Gruppe 33». Some of his works u. a. the three frescoes from 1955 for the Sangrubenschulhaus I or the three glass pictures of color workers in the west stairwell of the employment office in Basel from 1967 emerged as winners of the competitions of the Basel-Stadt art credit .
