Rudolf Oetker was the son of August Oetker , the founder of the Bielefeld company Dr. August Oetker KG , and his wife Caroline Oetker geb. Jacobi. During the First World War , Oetker was drafted into the Uhlans and then transferred to the infantry . He led a company of 200 soldiers. He fell at Verdun at the age of 26. A foundation by his mother Caroline Oetker in memory of him, who had already suggested a concert hall for Bielefeld during his lifetime and who played the piano and organ himself, made the construction of the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle possible .

Oetker was married to Ida nee Meyer. The couple had a daughter, Ursula Oetker, and a son, Rudolf-August Oetker , who was born six months after his father's death and who took over the family business in 1944. In 1919 Ida Oetker married Richard Kaselowski , who was part of the company's management until his death in 1944.
