Rudolf Reuter (librarian)

Josef Rudolf Reuter (born July 29, 1891 in Essen , † January 11, 1977 in Cologne ) was a German librarian , adult educator and university professor .

Life

In 1913 Reuter submitted a historical dissertation, with which he received his doctorate in 1914 at the University of Bonn . At first he worked as a high school teacher in the school service. In 1923 he took over the chairmanship of the newly founded Prussian Volksbüchereivereinigung. On August 1, 1924, he became director of the public libraries in Cologne (today: Cologne City Library ). Under his direction, the West German Volksbüchereischule was opened there on May 15, 1928 as a technical school for librarians. The school was closed on October 1, 1944. After 1945 he headed the new librarian training institute in Cologne (today: TH Köln ). From 1956 he was a member of the Presidium of the Federation of Theater Communities based in Bonn. From 1957 he had continuous teaching positions at the University of Cologne on the theory of adult education. Reuter took part in meetings of the Hohenrodter Bund in 1926 and 1927 and in meetings of the Wolfram Bund in 1925 and 1926.

In 1920 Reuter married Maria Agnes Koch in Cologne. He died in 1977 at the age of 85 and was buried in his wife's family grave in Cologne's Melaten cemetery .
