Rudolf Rufener (born May 31, 1906 in Zurich , † November 14, 1972 in Aarau ) was a Swiss classical philologist , high school teacher and Plato translator.

Rudolf Rufener received his doctorate in classical philology at the University of Bern in 1935 ( The syntactic structure of the distiches in the Roman elegy ). He was a teacher at the Aarau Cantonal School .

His new translation of Plato was published by Artemis from 1948 ( Library of the Old World , new edition in 1974 by Olof Gigon and again in 2005). They became widespread, even in the collection Tusculum (State Symposium) and was compared with the closely linked to the original text, difficult to understand for modern readers translation of Friedrich Schleiermacher praised 19th century for their smoother and more readable form. Manfred Fuhrmann , himself a Plato translator, already characterized the older translation by Otto Apelt ( PhB , Felix Meiner Verlag, from 1916), and also clearly saw the intrusion of interpretive elements in Rufener.
