Rudolf Schmalfuß (born February 20, 1890 in Leumnitz (since 1919 a district of Gera ), † February 7, 1957 in Ronneburg , Thuringia ), was a German painter , draftsman and commercial artist .

Life

Schmalfuß was born the son of a gardener in Leumnitz near Gera. From April 1913 he studied drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl . In 1938 he was represented together with the painters August Lüdecke-Cleve , Max Eschle , Willi Engelhardt, Paul Süß, Hermann Keimel and Karl Blocherer in the library of the Deutsches Museum as part of a watercolor exhibition. The watercolors were the result of a joint trip by the seven Munich artists. “In general, the names of the exhibitors are known as graphic artists. Here, however, you will discover them as landscapers and will be no less delighted. ”Schmalfuß was part of the Schwabing bohemian community in the 1920s and 1930s. His name can be found in the Fürmann Chronicle , the guest book of the Fürmann artist pension in Schwabing, a popular meeting place for Schwabing bohemians at the beginning of the twentieth century. He had a close friendship with the artist Willy Hallstein , who worked for the Munich magazine JUGEND. In the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minneapolis there is a drawing of Schmalfuß, which shows Willy Hallstein on his death bed.
