Life

Schwandt was born in 1898 in the then Russian province of Lithuania as the son of a farmer. After he graduated from high school, he completed an apprenticeship as an agronomist at a higher agricultural school. He then served from 1920 to 1923 in the army of the newly founded Republic of Lithuania, most recently in the rank of sergeant. After initially working in agriculture, Schwandt worked from 1928 to 1940 as a district agronomist and later as a district agronomist for the Lithuanian Chamber of Agriculture.

After the German occupation of Lithuania, Schwandt initially continued to work in his old position, now as chief agronomist and director of the chief commissioner for agriculture in Lithuania. In 1941 he moved to Königsberg , where he worked as operations manager and goods director at the East Prussian Landgesellschaft until 1944. When I started working for German offices, I joined the German Labor Front . When the Red Army reached German territory in 1944, Schwandt was called in again for military service. With the rank of sergeant, he went into captivity at the end of the war, from which he was released very soon.

Since Schwandt's homeland was now occupied by the Red Army and there was no possibility for ethnic Germans to return to their ancestral home, he stayed in Thuringia, where he found a job at the Rudolstadt District Office on September 17, 1945 . Due to his professional experience in agriculture, he was appointed economic advisor to the Thuringian State Office for Agriculture and Forestry with effect from November 1, 1945, and later to the Thuringian Ministry of Supply, Agriculture Department in the Rudolstadt district. In order to be on the safe side politically, Schwandt joined the SED in 1946 . On September 15, 1947 he was appointed head of the district agricultural office in the Rudolstadt district. He remained in this position until 1951. When the DBD was founded on the initiative of the SED in the spring of 1948, SED members mainly active in agriculture were instructed to switch to the DBD. Schwandt became the first DBD district chairman in Rudolstadt and a member of the DBD regional board of Thuringia. For a short time from the end of February to the end of March 1950 he was co-opted representative of the DBD in the Thuringian state parliament. For the Volkskammer elections in 1950, the DBD presented Schwandt as a candidate. He represented his party as a member of the GDR parliament until 1954. In 1951 he moved his residence to Erfurt and subsequently worked as chairman of an LPG for several years . Nothing is known about his further life.
