Rudolf Sohm

Rudolf Sohm (born July 1, 1939 in Dornbirn ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Sohm was mayor of the city of Dornbirn in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg from 1984 to 1999 .

Political career

Rudolf Sohm grew up in a family of craftsmen and graduated from the Matura at a commercial college. Subsequently, he was initially drawn into the private sector, where he rose to become export manager at FM Hämmerle . Politically, Sohm was initially active as Deputy Mayor of Dornbirn, before he was elected as his successor by the city ​​council on January 19, 1984 after the resignation of Mayor Karl Bohle at the end of 1983 . In the municipal council elections in 1985, 1990 and 1995, Rudolf Sohm succeeded in being re-elected as mayor and in maintaining an absolute majority for the ÖVP in Dornbirn.

During Rudolf Sohm's tenure as mayor, among other things, the construction of the new city street (today's route of Vorarlberger Straße L190 through the Dornbirn city center), the construction of the pedestrian zone around the Dornbirn market square in 1989 and the introduction of the city ​​bus system in Dornbirn .

In the spring of 1999, Rudolf Sohm finally resigned after a 15-year term as mayor for reasons of age. The city council elected its deputy mayor Wolfgang Rümmele as his successor . After leaving local politics, Rudolf Sohm was awarded honorary citizenship of his home town Dornbirn in 1999.
