Rudolf Steinheil

Rudolf Steinheil (born February 22, 1865 in Munich ; † January 1, 1930 there ) was a German physicist, inventor and entrepreneur.

Rudolf Franz Eduard Steinheil, son of the optician and owner of the optical-astronomical workshops CA Steinheil & Sons in Munich, Hugo Adolph Steinheil , and his wife Ida, geb. Erdinger, grew up with his relatives Friedrich Karl (Fritz) (1864–1926) and Emma (1865–1946) in Munich, attended Maximiliansgymnasium here from the school year 1874/75 and passed the Abitur examination in 1884. He then studied at the University of Munich until 1889 and in Kiel in 1886 and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

Around 1890 Rudolf Steinheil took over the management of his father's company. He developed powerful astigmatically corrected lens systems and acquired other patents in addition to the existing patents (1894: "Rapidantiplanet", 1896: "Orthostigmat"; 1902: "Unofocal"). In the specialist literature he published numerous articles on optical-technical problems and their solutions, including from 1892 in the Zeitschrift für Instrumentenkunde. In 1912 he was appointed titular professor.

After Steinheil's death, the company was continued as a family business. In 1962 it was taken over by the Elgeet Optical Company in Rochester, USA, but was soon sold again.

The Steinheil company archive in the Deutsches Museum in Munich contains around 75 folders relating to Rudolf Steinheil.

He was married to Emmy Voit (1864-1903). Her daughter Elsbeth Steinheil (1893–1955) was the first German graduate engineer in mechanical engineering, she later married the technical director of CA Steinheil & Sons Walter Franz.
