biography

Tewes was the son of a respected businessman and consul and studied at the Munich Academy . After 1904 he spent a long time in Paris , Italy , Spain and South America . 1919-27 he stayed in Paris and then became a Berlin resident and a member of the Berlin Secession .

Tewes dealt particularly intensively with the paintings by Vincent van Gogh . He belonged with Marga Berck and Alfred Walter Heymel to the association “The Golden Cloud ”. His self-portrait from 1906, which was first exhibited at the Berlin Secession, and the Blooming Orchard from 1907 clearly bear witness to Van Gogh's influence. The parallels in the choice of color, brushwork and subject matter led to a joint presentation of 20 Tewes pictures with seven paintings by Van Gogh in the Kunsthalle Bremen in 1910 . In 1913 the Kunsthalle Bremen acquired the self-portrait Tewes as a gift from the gallery association. In 1939 he moved to Bremen. In 2000 the Bremen art gallery dedicated a special exhibition to the painter under the title “Rudolf Tewes - A Painter Under the Spell of Late Impressionism”.
