Rudolf Tonn

Rudolf Tonn (born January 9, 1931 in Schwechat ; † May 14, 2015 in Villach ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Tonn was mayor of the Lower Austrian municipality of Schwechat and a member of the National Council .

Life

Tonn was born in Schwechat, his family moved to the 17th district of Hernals in Vienna in 1932 and to the Lower Austrian municipality of Achau in 1940 . He attended compulsory school and the HTL Mödling for a year . After dropping out of the HTL, he learned to be an electrical installer. Tonn switched to the Schwechat brewery, where he was the deputy works council chairman at the age of 28 and attended the trade union school. Tonn became a member of the SPÖ in 1952 and became a city councilor in April 1965 and vice mayor in 1971. In January 1973, the then mayor Otto Koch resigned due to age and Rudolf Tonn was elected mayor of the city of Schwechat by the local council. He was president of the ASKÖ for Lower Austria and vice-president of the ASKÖ federal organization. He was a member of the National Council from 1971 to 1986. He resigned from his position as mayor in January 1991. The Rudolf Tonn Stadium in Schwechat was named after him in 2001 .
