Rudolph Bakkers

Rudolph Bakkers (born July 16, 1894 , † probably in the 20th century ) was a Dutch major general in the Royal Dutch-Indian Army ( Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger ) .

Life

Bakkers completed military training after attending school and was employed by the Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (KNIL) in the Dutch East Indies . As the successor to Colonel Tjalling Bakker , he became commander of the 6th regiment of the KNIL in 1935, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel (Luitenant-Kolonel) on June 30, 1937 and to Colonel (Kolonel) 1940.

On October 13, 1941, Bakkers replaced Major General Hein ter Poorten as Chief of Staff of the Royal Dutch-Indian Army. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, stated Dutch government in exile the Empire of Japan in cooperation with the United States , Britain and other countries to war. Between December 16, 1941 and March 8, 1942, the Japanese army conquered all of the Dutch East Indies. On March 9, 1942 took place against the attackers on the island of Java , the unconditional surrender . The area remained in Japanese hands until the end of the war in 1945.

He himself was promoted to Major General (Generaal-majoor) on February 19, 1942 and held the position of Chief of Staff of the KNIL until the surrender on March 9, 1943.
