Rudolph Hauthal (born March 3, 1854 in Hamburg , † 1928 in Hildesheim ) was a German geologist .

Hauthal studied theology, later natural sciences, and went to Argentina in 1890 as a private teacher. In 1891, Hauthal became director of the newly established Museum of La Plata , Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and in 1896 Professor of Geology at the University of La Plata . In the same year he met the geologist Carl Emanuel Burckhardt . Hauthal made numerous research trips to the Andean region of Argentina , to Chile , Paraguay , Bolivia and Peru . In addition to the geology of the Andes and the history of the glaciation of the Patagonian Ice Sheet , he also researched the flora of the region. He confirmed and supplemented the findings of the geologist Hans Meyer (1858–1929) on the multiphase nature of the glaciation of Patagonia. He also managed the first ascent of the Lanín volcano in the southern Andes.

In 1906 he returned to Germany, where he headed the Roemer Museum in Hildesheim , today part of the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum Hildesheim , until 1924 . The museum owes large parts of its important ancient Peru collection to its good contacts in Latin America.

The Lago Hauthal he discovered in the Argentine Andes was named after him.
