Rudy Lawless

Rudy Lawless (born 1932 or 1933; † 21st February 2017 in New York City ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Lawless, who was largely self-taught as a drummer , also took lessons from Roy Haynes . At 16 he toured with Eddie Durham ; In 1960 he made his first recordings in New York City with Jimmy Neely ( Misirlou ). In the 1960s he worked a. a. with Betty Roche , Etta Jones , Junior Mance, and Freddie McCoy ( Spider Man , 1966); with Mary Lou Williams he had an engagement in the jazz club Hickory House on New York's 52nd Street. In the 1970s he played a. a. with Hazel Scott and Dakota Staton ; Lawless lived in Tokyo from 1988 to 1990. After his return to New York he performed regularly with his own ensembles in clubs with singers such as Keisha St. Joan and George Jackson, a. a. also in the jazz club Le Cave On First as a member of the Donald Smith Trio (with Bob Cunningham ). 2015 recordings with the pianist Danny Mixon ( Pass It On ); after that he had to end his music career due to illness. He died in New York's Bellevue Hospital in 2017 at the age of 84. In the field of jazz he was involved in 14 recording sessions from 1960 to 2015.
