The Schwandiholz or Schwandiburg ruins are the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle that was probably built in the High Middle Ages . It is located in today's Schwandiholz in the municipality of Stettlen in the canton of Bern . Only a few remains of the wall have survived.

Location and description

The ruins of the Schwandiburg are located northeast of the former Deisswil cardboard factory in Schwandiholz on a flattened hill. It essentially consists of three parts: the main castle square (tower, palas , chapel and surrounding wall ), the outwork on a separate plateau and the ring wall around the castle hill. Parts of this ring wall can still be seen today.

history

Little is known of the history of the castle. Probably built in different stages between the 9th and 13th centuries, it was destroyed by the Bernese at the end of the 13th century. Lords of the castle were the "Lords of Stetleton" mentioned in a few documents. Otto Tschumi , former curator of the Historisches Museum Bern , excavated and documented parts of the castle with unemployed teachers in the summer of 1938.
