Rumold von Mechelen , also Rumbold or Romuald , netherlands. Rombout , engl. Rumbold , French Rombaut , from Latin Rumboldus , Rumuoldus or Romualdus († end of the 8th century ), is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church . He is venerated as the patron saint of the Belgian city ​​of Mechelen , its cathedral and the Archdiocese of Mechelen . His feast day is June 24th .

Life

There are no reliable sources about Rumold's life. He is said to have come from Britain to Flanders and is counted as part of the Anglo-Saxon mission around St. Boniface . Like him, he is said to have obtained legitimation and broadcast in Rome . Despite his Saxon name, one legend knows him as the son of a Scottish king, and another as the Bishop of Dublin , from where he set out on a missionary trip . In Flanders he worked as a messenger of faith. He is named as one of the founders of the Lier Monastery . Later he lived as a hermit near Mechelen, where he was slain by robbers.

Adoration

In the cathedral of Mechelen his relics are kept in an ornate golden shrine on the high altar . A statue and a cycle of pictures of biographical scenes represent him. His patronage is widespread throughout Flanders .
