The Rumpelsberg is 799  m above sea level. NN high mountain in the Thuringian Forest . It is almost completely forested with spruce.

It is located north of the municipal boundary between Ilmenau and Elgersburg in the Ilm district , a little north of the main ridge of the Thuringian Forest . The Rumpelsberg is bordered by the 785 meter high Bundschildskopf in the south, the 769 meter high Heidelberg in the east, the Jüchnitz valley in the west and the 765 meter high Hohe Warte in the north. Although the latter is actually just an upstream secondary peak of the Rumpelsberg, it is widely known because the Carl-Eduard-Warte observation tower was built on it in 1911 .

The Rumpelsberg is the highest elevation in the Elgersburg district.
