Runic block from Sjusta

The rune block of Sjusta ( Swedish Runblocket i Sjusta ) is located on the Galgflottsbacken (hill) in the west of Sjusta in Uppland in Sweden . He bears the rune stone no. U687 and was first described in 1858 by the author of the Swedish national anthem and historian Richard Dybeck (1811–1877).

The approximately five meter long boulder made of gray granite gneiss has a height and width of about two meters. The 1.48 m long and 1.26 m wide scratch is on one narrow side.

inscription

The inscription reads:

Runa made this memorial in memory of Spjallbuði and Sven and Andvett and Ragnar, her and Helgis sons; and Sigrid to Spjallbuði, her husband. He died in Holmgard in St. Olaf's Church . Opir carved the runes .

Original text:

Holmgard was the Viking name for the Novgorod trading post in Russia. Spjallbude was certainly a trader of the Nordic guild in town.
